Gray scale hour glass counting down to school allocation day

If your child is either starting school or moving up to High School this September you will by now have completed their application form and are nervously awaiting the outcome on 1st March (for Secondary Schools) or 16th April for Primary Schools. There is nothing more you can do at this point, or is there?

Some families are reasonably sure they will get their first choice place - if for example you know you live sufficiently close to the school, have a sibling already attending or otherwise undoubtedly meet the Admission Criteria.

Many more will be less sure and some will be expecting disappointing news. It is always worth giving some thought to what action you can take before, on and immediately after National Allocation Day.

If you know you are not going to get the place you want for your child you can at least start researching what is involved in a School Appeal - this is where you appear before a Panel of three Independent People who have had nothing to do with the decisions made to date or any connection with the school or Local Authority that has made them.  They generally consider the impact on the school of having to take additional pupils and the impact on the child of not being allocated a place.  Our free eBook might be a good start. You can also start gathering data about the school which will help you challenge the school’s case that they are full and your child would cause real issues if they were admitted even though the school is technically full.
